['vɛlɛs], Egon, österreichischer Musikforscher und Komponist, * Wien 21. 10. 1885, ✝ Oxford 9. 11. 1974; war Schüler von G. Adler und A. Schönberg, wurde 1929 Professor in Wien und emigrierte 1938 nach Großbritannien, wo er u. a. in Oxford und Cambridge lehrte. Er schrieb in Anlehnung an den Stil G. Mahlers und Schönbergs u. a. neun Sinfonien, sechs Opern, Ballette und Kammermusik.
 
Schriften: Arnold Schönberg (1921); Aufgaben und Probleme auf dem Gebiete der byzantinischen und orientalischen Kirchenmusik (1923); Byzantinische Musik (1927); A history of Byzantine music and hymnography (1949); Early Christian music (1954).
